Eyesight and Your Health

Having an eye examination is part of your routine health care. It is important as you only have one set of eyes which cannot be replaced. An eye examination can detect many things not just refractive errors requiring spectacles, but also Diabetes, Glaucoma, Hypertension, Cataract and Macular Degeneration.
  • Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition caused by raised intra-ocular pressure, and if left untreated can lead to severe sight loss and even blindness.

Regular eye examinations including intra-ocular pressure checks are important as early detection of Glaucoma is vital, as early diagnosis and treatment can help stop your vision from getting worse.

  • Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. This is because your pancreas does not produce enough insulin to help the glucose enter your cells.

Diabetic screening is important as it helps to prevent sight loss. Screening can detect any damage early before you notice any changes to your vision.

We take photographs of the back of the eye and send them to the hospital for analysis. Usually drops will be put into your eyes to make your pupils larger to allow a clearer image.

  • Cataracts

Cataracts are formed when the clear lens inside your eyes becomes cloudy. The main cause is age and most people will eventually develop cataracts in both eyes, although one eye maybe affected before the other. This is a gradual process; it is not painful and it effects men and women equally.

  • Macular Degeneration

The macular is an area at the back of your eye that you use for seeing fine detail, such as reading books, recognising faces or watching television etc. Macular degeneration covers a number of eye conditions which affect the macular. One of the most common symptoms of macular degeneration is noticing that straight lines appear wavy or that there are patches missing from your vision. You may not notice this if it happens in one eye as the other eye will compensate, so it’s important to have regular sight tests.
